However, this reputation did not last. Lana became involved in the investigation of the spree killings of Joe Darke, working alongside Bruce Goodman, Jake Marshall, Angel Starr and Damon Gant. Jake's brother Neil Marshall was to prosecute. It was a clear-cut case; Darke even turned himself in. Lana made dinner plans with her sister Ema, who waited in Lana's office for her. However, Darke escaped during an interrogation and made his way to that same office, with Neil in hot pursuit. When Lana arrived at the crime scene, she found Ema and Darke unconscious on the floor, and Neil impaled on the sword of a decorative suit of armor. The evidence before her seemed to indicate that Ema had killed Neil, which made her panic for the first time in her life. Gant, who had also arrived at the scene, agreed to help her rearrange the crime scene to shift the blame away from Ema and onto Darke. They moved the body - though not before taking a photo as she had found it - and planted part of Darke's knife in the corpse. Ema woke up in Lana's arms, and the police eventually arrived to conduct the ensuing murder investigation. With the crime scene altered, as well as with the help of what little Ema could remember from the incident, Darke was convicted of Neil's murder (on top of the existing charges) by a different prosecutor, Miles Edgeworth, and he was subsequently executed. However, Gant began to manipulate Lana by threatening to expose all the evidence that seemed to point towards Ema being the real killer. He arranged to have Lana transferred to the prosecutor's office and promoted to the position of Chief Prosecutor, so that he could have unhindered power over all investigations. Lana withdrew into herself, becoming cold so as to help deal with all the things Gant would have her do over the next two years. Meanwhile, nearly all of the other detectives involved in the incident were fired or demoted, save Bruce Goodman. The events of SL-9 came to a head with the murder of Bruce Goodman. Gant had killed Goodman in a panic, having felt threatened by the detective insisting that the SL-9 case be reopened, and ordered Lana to dispose of the corpse. She transported the body via an oblivious Miles Edgeworth's car trunk to the underground parking lot of the Prosecutor's Building. She immediately recognized the knife in Goodman's body as belonging to Darke. She wrapped it in the muffler she normally wore around her neck and placed it in the muffler of the car. Lana took a knife she found in Edgeworth's car and stabbed the body with it to have it later established as the murder weapon. Unused to stabbing a man, even a dead one, she was shaking as she plunged the knife in and ended up cutting her right hand. She attempted to phone her sister on a wall-mounted telephone in the parking lot to tell her to dispose of Darke's knife, but it was out of order. She then attempted the call again on her mobile phone, but the signal was poor. Before she could properly talk to her little sister, Angel Starr appeared. Having seen what she thought was the Chief Prosecutor committing murder, Starr rushed down from the security office overlooking the lot and arrested Lana, but not before the supposed killer kicked over an oil drum filled with water to wash away any bloodstains on the ground. Gant is usually jovial and a bit eccentric, but is ultimately a respected leader of the police force. He has a habit of making up pet names for various people, such as "Wrighto" for Wright, "Worthy" for Edgeworth, and "Udgey" for the judge. Gant had a habit of playing with his hair when he's mulling something over and clapping whilst laughing when amused. He also shows a liking for swimming, and would often suggest communal swimming sessions between himself and others. When upset, he creates a long and ominous pause in the room while he simply stares at whoever upset him. Prior to the SL-9 Incident, Damon Gant was the Chief Detective of the Los Angeles district. He and his partner, Lana Skye, became known as the "Legendary Duo" for their services to law enforcement. Gant also called himself the "crime computer", taking great pride in his crime-solving abilities. During Darke's interrogation (the SL-9 incident), a power outage occurred. Seeing his opportunity, Darke fled the room and, with Neil in hot pursuit, ended up in the joint office of Gant and Skye, where he found Skye's sister Ema. By the time Gant made it to the office, all three occupants were unconscious from a violent confrontation. More determined to convict Darke than ever, and seeing a chance to use the situation to his advantage, Gant cut a piece of cloth from Neil's vest with Ema's handprint on it, picked up the unconscious prosecutor, and impaled him on the sword of a suit of armor by Gant's desk, killing him. He then wrote the name "Ema" with the victim's blood on a nearby jar and broke it to create a fake clue. Lana arrived later and saw the crime scene. Gant told Lana to rearrange the crime scene to make it look like Darke had killed Neil, and Lana complied because she believed that Ema had accidentally killed Neil. Gant hid two items in his safe for "insurance" purposes: a piece of the jar with part of Ema's name on it, and the piece of cloth with Ema's handprint. Gant and Lana presented their false evidence to Neil's replacement, Miles Edgeworth. Thanks to this evidence, Darke was sentenced to death for his crimes. Gant later became Chief of Police and arranged for Lana to be Chief Prosecutor so that he could control her and the prosecutor's office. To make sure that the investigation team stayed quiet about the evidence, Chief Gant fired Angel Starr and demoted Jake to patrolman level. He let Goodman keep his position to draw away suspicion of his actions. For the next two years, Damon Gant blackmailed Lana Skye to keep control of the city's law enforcement. In 2011 (5 years before the events of "Turnabout Samurai"), Dee Vasquez witnessed a fatal accident involving action star Jack Hammer and a fellow actor named Manuel. Vasquez was producing a show starring Jack Hammer, but during a fight scene, Hammer accidentally pushed Manuel onto some sharp fence tips, killing him. A paparazzo took a photo of the incident, but he was silenced by Vasquez's mob contacts. Vasquez later used the accident to blackmail Hammer into doing what she wanted, including working on kids' TV shows as villains for petty change. Five years later, Vasquez produced the TV show The Steel Samurai: Warrior of Neo Olde Tokyo, starring Will Powers as the Steel Samurai and Hammer as the villainous Evil Magistrate. By this time, Hammer was fed up with the blackmail; he donned Powers' Steel Samurai costume and confronted Vasquez in Studio 2 of Global Studios, intending to kill her. However, the ensuing fight ended with his (accidental) death on the same fence that had killed Manuel. Vasquez's extreme reaction to Manuel's death, as shown in a flashback, could indicate that she knew the actor personally. Alternatively, it may just show a producer panicking at having an actor die in front of her and under her care. Two years later, she was called as a witness in the murder of a fellow detective (Bruce Goodman) who had been involved in the SL-9 Incident. Starr has a strong hostility towards prosecutors, especially Lana Skye and Miles Edgeworth. Starr is an aggressive and promiscuous woman who has little trust in other people. She also has the habit of using her various boxed lunches to emphasize a point, to bribe someone or to indicate her true feelings towards someone. She always speaks with her bangs covering one eye. One of her personality quirks is that her more aggressive side causes her to flip her bangs to cover her left eye. Her left eye is brown and appears serene and sweet, while her right eye is grey and looks far more menacing. She seems perfectly aware of these two drastically different parts of her personality, saying that she is sometimes a demon but she could be an angel too. A senile old witness for the trial of Miles Edgeworth for the murder of Robert Hammond. Frequently confused, he calls Wright "Keith" and Maya Fey "Meg", and he believes they're his children who had come back to him to inherit his "pasta shop". He also has the habit of falling asleep spontaneously. He owns a pet parrot called "Polly". His real name is "Yanni Yogi", and his "senile, confused old man" demeanour is all an act. Yanni was a bailiff at the District Court, and was the prime suspect in the DL-6 Incident. In 2001, during the DL-6 incident, Yanni Yogi accompanied defense attorney Gregory Edgeworth and his son Miles into an elevator to leave the courthouse. Suddenly, an earthquake struck, shutting off the power and leaving the three stranded in the elevator for five hours. During this ordeal, Yogi panicked and attacked Gregory. During the struggle, Yogi's pistol fell out of its holster, and Miles tried to stop the fighting by throwing it. There was a single gunshot and a scream, and all three of the passengers fell unconscious. When Yogi woke up, Gregory Edgeworth was dead and he was the top suspect in the murder. Due to the lack of evidence against Yogi, the police used a spirit medium by the name of Misty Fey to contact Gregory's spirit. Gregory accused Yogi of the murder, so Yogi was arrested and put on trial for the murder. Yogi's lawyer, Robert Hammond, instructed him to plead temporary insanity to avoid conviction. Yogi did so and pretended to have succumbed to brain damage from the lack of oxygen in the elevator. This got Yogi an acquittal. Because Yogi had gained an acquittal through an insanity plea rather than a not guilty plea, he lost his social standing and his career as a bailiff. In addition to this, his fiancée, Polly Jenkins, committed suicide. Yogi blamed Hammond and Miles Edgeworth for what had happened to him, because he really had not done anything but had been compelled to admit both to wrongdoing and to crippling brain damage. Despite his troubles, he managed to land a job running a boat rental shop at Gourd Lake. He also burned his fingerprints off for the sake of hiding his real identity. Sometime in December 2016, Yogi received a letter from Prosecutor Manfred von Karma, which contained detailed instructions for killing Hammond and then framing Edgeworth for the murder. On Christmas Eve, Yogi called Hammond and Edgeworth to his shack. When Hammond arrived first, Yogi fatally shot him through the heart. About 15 minutes after midnight, Yogi put on Hammond's coat to disguise himself, and then he took Edgeworth on a boat ride to the middle of Gourd Lake. There, Yogi made known his intentions for revenge and shot the murder weapon twice, the first to attract the attention of any potential witnesses, and the second to give the witnesses a false crime scene for Hammond's murder. Yogi jumped backwards into the lake, leaving Edgeworth and the pistol on the boat. The sole witness in the trial of Larry Butz for the murder of Cindy Stone, which was also the first case of defense attorney Phoenix Wright. He claimed to be a newspaper salesman. Sahwit was actually a burglar, and pretended to sell newspapers so that he could learn when people left their homes in order to burgle them. During one of his burglaries, Sahwit was caught in the act by the owner of the apartment, Stone. He picked up the nearest thing he could find, a clock-statue of The Thinker, and hit her over the head with it. The clock then spoke the time, which Sahwit believed was the real time. She died of blood loss, and Sahwit decided to frame her boyfriend Butz, who had visited her apartment on the day of the murder. Sahwit was called as the sole witness to the murder. His testimony was full of holes that Wright could exploit, even giving testimony that contradicted his earlier statements, and he soon reached a point in which he was accused of the murder. He then switched from his sycophantic persona into his real, rage-filled nature. He flung his toupée at Wright and said that he could not prove that the clock was three hours slow at the time of the murder. Wright - with the aid of Mia Fey - explained that Stone had gone to France the day before the murder; she had not yet adjusted the time back to the local time, so the clock was actually nine hours ahead. Sahwit broke down on the stand; he hyperventilated and collapsed. Butz was subsequently declared not guilty, Wright's career took off, and Sahwit was convicted and imprisoned. For the next few years, Sahwit began training as an animal groomer for the therapy animals living in the prison, hoping that this would help get his sentence reduced. One day, he fell and broke his electronic prison bracelet, which would send an electric shock to prisoners who tried to enter certain rooms unattended. Because of this, he was secretly able to move about the prison as he liked. Prison warden Fifi Laguarde found out, but instead of punishing him or replacing the bracelet, she decided to use him toward her own ends. On a weekly basis, Sahwit would access the circuit breaker and cut the power, then return later on to restore the power. In exchange, he would be able to keep his little secret, and Laguarde would give him special treatment. He ended up discovering the body of Bronco Knight, who had been arrested and placed in detention for murder. Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth was able to deduce what Sahwit knew, and had him given a working replacement bracelet. Edgeworth went on to deduce that Laguarde murdered Knight. Jake Marshall is a cowboy-obsessed patrol officer with the Los Angeles Police Department when Bruce Goodman was murdered. He often makes references to the state of Texas, even though he is actually from Los Angeles. Jake is obsessed with the Wild West. He dresses in a poncho and speaks like a stereotypical cowboy. He also tends to be calm and not easily flustered. His second favorite food is Angel Starr's Salisbury steak lunch, his favorite being spaghetti from his local joint. Jake has a laid-back attitude to his duties as a guard. He's supposed to go inside the evidence room to check it three times a day, but states that it's "not his style" and actually only visits the room once a month to "pay respects". On February of 2015, during the events of the SL-9 incident, Jake Marshall took a case with his brother Neil Marshall, detective Angel Starr, detective Bruce Goodman and chief detectives Damon Gant and Lana Skye to track down serial killer Joe Darke. However, tragedy stuck when Darke escaped police custody during a blackout and ran into Neil and Ema Skye. Neil was found dead. Darke was tried for Neil's death on top of his other murders and he was found guilty. After the incident, Jake was demoted to patrolman, guard of the evidence room, but Jake, alongside Starr and Goodman, thought something was wrong with the evidence. Before his demotion, he acted as a mentor to Dick Gumshoe when Dick started out in the force, giving him a small cactus that he claimed would "listen to all troubles." For the next two years, Jake tried to convince his peers and superiors to reopen the SL-9 case to find out the truth about what happened to his brother. Even though Starr supported him, Goodman stood steadfast. Finally on February 21st, 2017, the day the SL-9 case was to be closed permanently, Jake stole Goodman's ID. With his knowledge of where the security cameras were, his plan was to disguise himself as Goodman and steal the evidence to examine them himself. However, he hadn't made up his mind. Around 5:00 PM, Jake received a call from Lana Skye, who told him Goodman had been murdered. Realizing he only had one chance to find out the truth, he put on his disguise and went inside the evidence room. By luck, Goodman's locker was open, but was empty. (The locks in the evidence room had fingerprint scans, meaning only the detective it was assigned to could open it. In this case, a plastic glove was jammed between the sensors. Jake didn't know anything about them.) Jake then went to head back out, but was stopped by officer Mike Meekins. Meekins asked for his ID, but Jake panicked and pulled out a knife, knowing his cover would be blown if he did. Meekins lunged at the knife, cut his own hand and passed out. With his white coat bloodied, Jake went to his own locker and stuffed the coat inside, but mistakenly left a sleeve out. The next day, Jake was assigned to guard the crime scene, which was at the underground parking lot of the prosecutor's office, and ditched Goodman's ID card there. He assisted defense attorney Phoenix Wright and Lana's sister Ema Skye when they came to investigate; Lana had been accused of Goodman's murder, and Ema had hired Wright to represent her in court. After court was suspended for the day, Jake decided to turn himself in to the prosecutor's office, but not before giving Wright more information. When the trial resumed the next day, Wright used his information in concert with other information he had gathered to prove that Gant was the real killer in the murders of both Goodman and Neil. A special police team investigated these killings and believed that Darke was the culprit, but they lacked the decisive evidence needed for a conviction. This incident was known as the SL-9 Incident in police files. Gregory Edgeworth was a very talented criminal defense attorney and his son Miles idolized him. He was the kind of defense attorney who was not afraid to stand up against corruption. He used a calm, methodical, and logical approach to his investigations, preferring to use logic and confront witnesses directly at the scene rather than use the sorts of methods that Phoenix Wright or Apollo Justice would later use. He also had a rather serious, professional demeanor at all times, only smiling when he made a mistake and got a penalty, though it was more of a nervous grin. Miles inherited much of his father's methods, though he would come off as cold and ruthless due to his relative lack of tact. In December 2000, Gregory took on the case of Samson Tangaroa, a famous television chef. He was aided in his investigation by Eddie Fender, a young man who idolized him. The case was would later officially become known as the "IS-7 Incident". During his investigation into the crime, Gregory butted heads with Manfred von Karma, a legendary prosecutor with a perfect win record. As he and Fender became more involved in the case, he realized that von Karma wasn't just keeping him away from the scene because he didn't want the defense gaining any sort of advance; he was actively trying to hide something. Even Tyrell Badd, the detective who was supposed to lead the investigation, was continually stymied by von Karma's authority, and he eventually decided to ally with Gregory. Eventually, Gregory was able to figure out what von Karma was hiding; the body of the victim had disappeared before an autopsy could be carried out. During the subsequent trial, Gregory accused von Karma of hiding the disappearance of the body. However, von Karma produced a falsified autopsy report, verified by the police, and so the trial continued for a year. Eventually, Tangaroa falsely confessed to being an accomplice to the murder, but with Badd's help, Gregory revealed that the confession had been coerced. Although Gregory still lost the case, this bombshell revelation gave Manfred von Karma the only penalty on his "perfect" record, which enraged the perfection-obsessed prosecutor. The majority of the blame was shifted onto Ian Sideman, the initial lead detective before Badd, who was subsequently fired. After the trial, Gregory and Miles proceeded to leave the courthouse, accompanied by Yanni Yogi, a court bailiff. Gregory hoped to get a retrial for his client. However, an earthquake struck the building and shut the power down, leaving the three stranded in an elevator for five hours. Eventually, the oxygen supply diminished, and Yogi started to panic. The two men fought, leaving Miles to try and stop them by throwing Yogi's pistol, which had been loosened from the man's belt. The gun went off, hitting von Karma, who had wandered in front of the elevator door. Just then, the elevator door opened; already outraged by his penalty and in shock from his wound, von Karma picked up the gun and, finding all three of the elevator's occupants passed out, shot Gregory. Hammond was considered a skilled defense attorney, and was working at the Grossberg Law Offices fifteen years prior to his murder. However, he was also known for not placing any faith in his clients, working to win cases only for himself. This put him at odds with some of his colleagues. In 2001, Hammond represented Yanni Yogi when he was accused of the murder of Gregory Edgeworth, a case known to the police as the "DL-6 Incident". Due to the strong evidence and testimony against his client, Hammond claimed that oxygen deprivation had rendered Yogi temporarily insane. While Yogi was acquitted, his life took a turn for the worse: His fiancée killed herself, he was fired, and his friends abandoned him. Hammond later left Grossberg's company and kept a low profile for the rest of his life. Fifteen years later, Hammond went to Gourd Lake after receiving a letter from Yogi. However, this was a trap; Yogi wanted revenge on Hammond for the insanity plea ruining his life. They met, and Yogi shot and killed Hammond inside his shack. Yogi took Hammond's coat and disguised himself as his former lawyer to carry out a plan to frame Miles, who Yogi thought was Gregory's actual killer, for Hammond's murder. According to Jake Marshall, Goodman was not a particularly gifted detective, but he was a good man. Just like Jake and Starr, Goodman had his suspicions about the resolution of the SL-9 Incident. However, it took constant pestering by Jake Marshall for Goodman to finally confront Gant with his doubts, with unfortunate consequences. Bruce Goodman was the head investigator of the SL-9 case, tracking down serial killer Joe Darke, along with his fellow investigators Angel Starr and Jake Marshall. The detectives who supervised the investigation were the legendary detectives Damon Gant and Lana Skye. Darke escaped during questioning and attacked Lana's sister Ema Skye; the ensuing confrontation ended in the murder of prosecutor Neil Marshall. Goodman interviewed Ema, and her testimony assisted in Darke's conviction. The aftermath of the case saw Gant rise to the position of chief of police and Lana promoted to chief prosecutor. However, suspicion began to grow on the handling of the case, Gant fired Angel Starr and demoted Jake Marshall to patrolman. Unlike his comrades, Goodman kept his position, but he still felt the scars of the outcome of SL-9. Jake came to Goodman two years after the SL-9 incident, wanting his help to re-investigate the case before the evidence was transferred. At first, Goodman turned him down. Butz was not willing to let her go, however, and constantly tried to get into contact with her, but she ignored him completely. Although she was a model, her income was low and she had to rely on the generosity of her numerous "sugar daddies" to supplement her income. Shortly before her murder, Stone went on a photo shoot in Paris. Whilst there she also met with one of these "sugar daddies". Although she had dumped Butz, she carried a heavy clock in the shape of "The Thinker" with her on her travels of which Butz had made two: one for him and one for her. The day after her return from Paris, Stone came home to find an intruder in her apartment: the burglar Frank Sahwit. Sahwit was startled and picked up the nearest object to use as a weapon: "The Thinker". He brought it down on her head and left her to die of blood loss on the wooden floor of her home. Panicked at having committed murder, Sahwit attempted to blame the crime on Butz, who had visited the apartment earlier to try and talk to Stone. Butz went to court, represented by his childhood friend Phoenix Wright. He took a picture of himself holding his King of Prosecutors trophy with Detective Lana Skye and Chief Detective Damon Gant. After the award ceremony, Marshall and Gant went off to question Joe Darke, the suspect in the SL-9 Incident, about all the crimes he had committed. A sudden thunderstorm shut off the power, allowing Darke to escape from the room. The prosecutor chased off after him and found him in the office of Detectives Gant and Skye, where Darke was holding Lana's younger sister Ema hostage. Marshall attempted to save her by knocking Darke unconscious with the award he had just received. Ema, believing the man to be Darke, shoved Marshall aside and fell unconscious. Gant came in afterward and, seeing an opportunity to solidify the case against Darke and therefore secure his promotion to chief of police, proceeded to lift Marshall's unconscious body and place it onto the spear of a suit of armour in the room, thereby killing the unfortunate prosecutor.
