After graduating from a university in Tokyo, he has become a civil servant. He is an employee of the Aramatsuri Countermeasures Division (professional job in the Tokyo Metropolitan Government). He is originally from Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture. The Aramatsuri Countermeasures Division is comprised of individuals who can sense, control, and eliminate Aramatsuri. Recruitment is done by staff members at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government who are sensitive to Aramatsuri, and can identify and scout individuals. The protagonist was also scouted during his third year of university and accepted without taking an exam. Nothing happened when he was in the countryside, but his powers awakened because Tokyo is overflowing with Aramatsuri. The existence of the department is not disclosed to the general public, so his business card reads "Member of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's Bureau for the Promotion of Public Safety." A bartender and owner of a bar in Shinjuku 3-chome. His family lineage is connected to Onmyōdō (lit., "Way of Yin and Yang" — occult divination system based on the Taoist theory of the five elements​), but Onmyōdō itself is in decline. Disillusioned with this, he moved to Tokyo and entered the nightlife industry, which has many Onmyōdō practitioners. However, a faction of Onmyōdō practitioners has begun lobbying to gradually revive Onmyōdō's influence. Currently, a member of the Tsuchimikado school is a Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly member and is pushing for the establishment of an Onmyōryō (Bureau of Onmyōdō) within Tokyo.
