A high school student who loves stories of all kinds. He even daydreams about old tales and puts his emotions into roleplaying as the characters in a story. One afternoon, he is told to think about his career path after graduating from high school. As he is not talented and doesn't have any distinguishing traits besides a love of stories, he goes to the school library, his favourite haunt, to think things over. The teaching assistant Hanami recounts her own experiences about dreams and a career path, and shortly after they part ways Eito is summoned to the Great Library to be the latest Librarian. Through his experiences as a Librarian, Eito eventually charts his future career path as an editor. He is allowed to keep his Colette, which allows him to retain the connections he made during his stay at the Great Library.

The protagonist of "Alice in Wonderland". She takes her role as the template and role model of fairy tales for girls VERY seriously, to the point where she'll take up the responsibilities usually held by the lazy Lewis and tour Wonderland getting its inhabitants to shape up and fulfil their responsibilities in the story world. When fighting the worms, she equips a pair of gold gauntlets and usually punches worms out of existence. She's also capable of over a hundred forms of wrestling grapples. With help from Wonderland's special confectionery, she can also change her size in accordance to the original story which is occasionally called upon in emergencies. Alice was corrupted by one of Grimoire's parasite worms, which magnified the frustration she felt over Lewis not fulfilling her responsibilities as a Register and the stress she feels from the weight of her own responsibilities as the story's protagonist. Although Wonderland's inhabitants acquiesce to her demands, her excessively pushy demeanour leads to many inhabitants privately grousing about her manner to Heart and Lewis. After rescuing Lewis and having the parasite worm exorcised, Alice resolves to make Wonderland an even more enjoyable place for visitors like Eito. Although curious about sex, Alice is a prude who is easily flustered when she witnesses Heart and Lewis making love to Eito. She's not honest about her growing feelings to Eito, so Heart and Lewis take drastic measures to get her to confess and be more open when together with Eito.

The Register of "The Little Match Girl". She inherits the knowledge of Hans Christian Andersen, the writer of the story, but has a distinct personality all her own. She calls Historia for assistance when she discovers Match has been corrupted by one of the parasite worms. She takes her duties as a Register seriously and frequently admonishes the free-spirited Match but to no avail. Despite her nitpicking, she cares deeply for Match and appreciates how hard her role as the "tragic heroine" of the story is and why Match is so unwilling to "remain in character" all of the time. When fighting worms, she can hit them with her staff or use flames like Match does. Although disappointed Match makes love to Eito first, she eventually musters the courage to do the same thing after spending the day together with Eito on a date. Her tendency to defer to Match because of the latter's role in the story angers Match, who argues she has to be proactive if she wants happiness for herself. The two of them eventually compromise and have a threesome with Eito. She forms a formidable partnership with Match when they engage in snowball fights with guests from other stories. The children of the story love playing with Andersen because of her motherly nature, but are equally ruthless at teasing her when they play "flash the panties".

The protagonist of "Faust". She is bored with life as she has experienced every hedonistic pleasure there is thanks to Mephisto's magic. Eito and Tale are called in to deal with Faust's ennui as her lazy inaction in the long term would threaten the very nature of the story itself. Mephistopheles initially wields Faust like a human club when fighting worms, but after Faust regains motivation she destroys worms using her magic lantern. Unlike the other characters, Faust deliberately allowed Grimoire to corrupt her with a parasitic worm in the hope it would give her new exhilaration after the worm's effects on personality took root. However the experiment backfired as Faust's lack of stimulation from excessive hedonism was magnified instead. It is through the participation of the preparation for the Walpurgis Night Festival that Faust learns the value of creating and defending a venture through hard effort, as well as the feedback which comes from others for persevering to the end. This allows her to break the hold of the parasitic worm and regain her original motivation for summoning Mephistopheles. Through Mephisto's magic, Faust has expertise of the sexual pleasures of the female form. The inhabitants of her world keep their distance when she's out and about because she's liable to ask Mephistopheles to use magic to forcibly strip a woman and charm her to Faust's will.

Nominally the antagonist to Arsene Lupin in Maurice Leblanc's short stories, Ganimard cooperates with Lupin's heists by playing out the role of the thwarted rival whilst secretly aiding Lupin from behind the scenes when her clumsy mistakes threaten to expose the entire charade. Capable, competent and organised, Ganimard has the entire Parisian police force at her disposal in her ostensible quest to catch Lupin. Lupin's clumsy incompetence gives Ganimard no end of stress as she has to work behind the scenes to allow Lupin to escape without her subordinates finding out. She frequently vents her frustrations by gorging on whisky bonbons in her untidy flat alone. When Lupin is corrupted by the parasitic worm, Ganimard takes up Eito's challenge to catch Lupin before the end of the day and is allowed to go all out without worrying about Lupin's silly mistakes. She eventually corners Lupin on top of the Eiffel Tower and gets Lupin to realise power over the worms to rob and steal was not the same as pulling off a stylish robbery through one's own talents and skills. In response to Eito's challenge to become more of a rival to Lupin, Ganimard becomes the "impostor Lupin", hoping to motivate Lupin into training harder and getting rid of her propensity for catastrophic errors. Lupin eventually sees through the ruse, but appreciates Ganimard for the intent at the end of the mini-arc.

The Register for "Faust". She initially calls Eito and Tale in to help solve Faust's lazy ennui, but it turns out she was a willing accomplice in Faust's corruption as she's excited by the primal desires of humans and the deeds committed in their name. Her nihilism makes her a problem child amongst the Registers, something even Historia admits to. She uses her axe to cut down worms. Although her wish to see increasingly extreme acts in the name of primal desire gets in the way of her rightful duties as a register, she understands the personalities of Faust and Mephistopheles well and tries to ease their troubles when the mood strikes her. When she's not on duty, Goethe writes pot-boiler pornographic stories with a heavy Lesbian bent for the denizens of the story worlds to consume. Her readership stands at approximately 1.9 billion, so she feels a heavy responsibility to deliver a quality product in the face of strict deadlines. When Eito eventually tracks down Goethe as the writer of the chain porn novel, he is forced to work as her editor with an impending deadline looming as the job of the Librarian is to ease the troubles of Registers and Story characters. This experience serves as the inspiration for Eito's future career path, as Goethe discovers Eito is surprisingly talented at the job despite being forced into it.

A mysterious being capable of controlling worms, she infiltrates stories so that the worms under her command can devour the pages which constitute the story for her own ends. Her ability to freely enter and leave the story world without the use of the Great Library perplexes Historia and the others for much of the game. In addition, she can sense weaknesses in the main characters of a story and directly corrupt them with worms which latch to their subconscious desires and manifest them. The Register of the story written by Historia, she is originally named Iris and is kept alive by Historia through fragments of other stories regularly regaled to her as she struggles to mature. She is unable to speak, and when her existence becomes too fragile to materialise in front of Historia she is thought lost by Historia and Shiori to the worms. The white worm (later Mushiko) consumes her, but her deepest desire to show Historia a story she would be proud of spare her from oblivion and transforms her into a worm-Register hybrid who must continually devour the pages of other stories to maintain the existence of her own broken world. She later adopts the name "Grimoire" and only reveals her true identity after kidnapping Tale. After Tale succeeds in creating a stable story world through her diary, Grimoire is exorcised from her worm aspect but her neglect and abuse of Mushiko are a factor behind Mushiko's eventual berserk outburst. Grimoire eventually pacifies Mushiko in the battle at the Great Library, and resolves to make amends for her past transgressions by working as a Librarian under Historia's supervision. Extremely competent and organised, she soon supplants Shiori's role in the Great Library and works hard to prove herself in the eyes of Historia to whom she is absolutely devoted to.

The fun-loving gyaru Queen of Hearts, she first meets Eito, Tale and Alice at the Mad-Hatter's tea party. She is naturally talented at getting a rise out of Alice, but is also concerned at Louis's disappearance and set off from the castle in search of the Register. She relies on kicks to defeat worms. As the Queen of Hearts, she has overall command of the card army and has the bookmark required to summon them to different stories in emergencies. An archetypal gyaru who is idolised by Match as the ideal specimen, Heart nonetheless cares deeply for Alice's happiness despite the constant teasing and their antagonistic positions in the original story. She frequently works in concert with Lewis behind Alice's back, but she's motivated by the potential fun which arises from the plans hatched between the two.

The Head Librarian of the Great Library, Historia was created around the same time homo sapiens evolved the ability to tell stories from the imagination. Initially she executed her role alone as part of the "system" governing the maintenance of the collective gestalt that is the world of stories, but repeated interaction with the characters in stories and the occasional human guest Librarian allowed her to develop human emotions and a personality. Historia has the important role of coalescing stories in their published form from the wellspring of human imagination into books for the Great Library. In addition, she can give form to the fragments of imagination which have not yet been published as stories and materialise them in the Great Library. In this way, she can literally summon food from thin air and obtain the latest entertainment devices from the human world. When Shiori is summoned as a Librarian, Historia has recently become acquainted with the new gamut of human emotions but is unsure how to understand them. At Shiori's urging, she endeavours to write her own story which will allow her to understand and cope with human emotions better. Unfortunately her story does not take off and the Register she created, Iris, eventually fades from her consciousness and is presumably destroyed by the worms. When Iris and Historia reunite again after the former was thought lost to oblivion, the latter almost succeeds in killing her daughter were it not for the intervention of Eito, Tale and Shiori. After reconciliation, Historia rewards Eito and Shiori for their contributions by making an exception for the pair with regards to their Colletes which are normally returned to the Great Library before humans are sent back.

She is unusual in that the story she governs has no consensus over the identity of the writer, so her name is derived from the island in Chinese mythology from which immortals originated. She's capable of using her fan to slice worms into pieces. Old-fashioned and speaking with a heavy Kyoto accent, Hourai is bewildered by Kaguya's reluctance to leave her room and is unable to comprehend modern concepts such as podcasts and computers. She eventually calls Historia for help to resolve Kaguya's self-imposed shut-in behaviour, but her anxiety over her adopted daughter's well-being blinds her to the imminent threat to her story world from Grimoire. After reconciling with Kaguya and understanding her adopted daughter's desire to achieve something personal, Hourai works harder towards understanding modern technology in an effort to get closer to Kaguya. Unfortunately, aside from the Libnet chat network she finds Yumetube webcasts incomprehensible and inadvertently blunders into her own webcast using Kaguya's equipment. Hourai's dialogue even uses Ateji instead of Katakana when she hears words relating to modern society and technology. The stereotype of the overly worrying mother struggling with a teenage daughter, Hourai appreciates her story is one of the oldest in Japanese society and that it may be forgotten entirely if younger generations do not read it.

The polar opposite to Hourai, Kaguya embraces the tools of modern technology in her quest to be the biggest Yumetuber (Story world Youtube equivalent) personality ever. Her desire to be loved by all has been updated for the modern age, if modern audiences do not know and love Kaguya for her charms, she'll pull out all the stops to make it a reality. She channels the power of her devoted web audience into a blinding glow which helps other characters and the Librarians better attack the worms. Generally lazy, but if she's sufficiently motivated she can accomplish tasks beyond the scale of most mortals in a short span of time. Kaguya is exasperated with Hourai's inability to comprehend modern concepts like webcasts, so she's forging ahead with her goal without caring for Hourai's anxiety. Their relationship built over centuries isn't so easy to cast aside, so Kaguya still has the habit of calling Hourai "Mama" despite her intentions. Unlike the other protagonists, Kaguya has not been corrupted by Grimoire's worms. Her selfish desires and childishness do have severe consequences when the Moon Palace is attacked by Grimoire for its pages. When Grimoire's assault is fended off, Kaguya hires Eito and Tale as her producers. A big collaborative live concert is eventually planned with four of the other protagonists, but it nearly comes a cropper when Kaguya injures herself during her training regimen. Eito saves the day by taking leave and talking to all of the participants in a bid to keep the practise schedule alive, and the concert goes ahead for the first and only time.

A Japanese national who is serving as a Librarian when Eito is summoned, she helps Eito and Tale get used to their new surroundings and assists the pair when they are sent to the field from the Great Library. She likes to cook and bake her own food and pastries instead of relying on Historia to summon them wholesale. She frequently assists Historia in her duties and chastises the Head Librarian when she's skiving or eating confectionery above her daily limit. A talented writer who once shared a dream with Hanami whereby she would write a screenplay which Hanami would act on the big stage, Shiori's career took off after graduating from high school and she worked her way up to a popular screenwriter for television. Sadly Hanami did not have the same talent in acting and the dream they shared did not come to fruition as Hanami decided to retire from acting. Shiori missed Hanami's final stage performance and after hearing about her best friend's retirement blamed herself for destroying their shared dream. The guilt affected her writing ability and she is in a career-threatening slump when she is summoned by the Great Library. Although the concept of time does not apply to the Great Library, Shiori has been there for so long that her temporal point of origin differs from Eito by several years. When both of them make the decision to return, it is thanks to Historia allowing the pair to keep their Colettes which allows Shiori to remember the promise she made with Eito. After Eito graduates from high school, she eventually works together with him as a writer under his charge. As both of them retain their Colletes, the connections they made during their stint as Librarians remain extant.

The Register for "Alice in Wonderland". Lazy to the point of negligent in her duties, Alice gives her an earful every day telling her to shape up. A firm believer of "Alice in Wonderland as the pinnacle of fairy tales", she never panics no matter how dire her situation is and has absolutely no issue with the most outrageous events taking place in Wonderland (because it wouldn't be Wonderland otherwise) Usually too lazy to fight the worms, but if the situation is desperate she can use magic to defend herself. Grimoire initially captures and binds Lewis in the Queen of Heart's castle when Heart is away and sends her worms to devour pages. Lewis's absence eventually spurs Alice and the Librarians to action, and when they fight their way through to Heart's throne room Lewis is still happily asleep despite being bound with ropes. Lewis does care for Alice's well-being, and frequently teams up with Heart if the outcome of a project is Alice being happier (since Wonderland's energy and atmosphere is tied to the mental well being of Alice).

The Register for the story world selected by Historia for the vacation by the sea. She runs the hotel together with the fishmen staff. Extremely shy, she prefers to write down her thoughts at high speed before presenting them to someone to read on her behalf. If she's not talking to someone face to face, she can speak normally and with a much higher pitch (for instance if she's voice-recording for the hotel reception). The Register AND main character of "The Shadow over Innsmouth", H.P Lovecraft's sole published full work. Her problems with interpersonal connection lead her to reach out to her pen friend Historia for assistance. Historia was looking for a place to vacation, so took the opportunity to bring the Librarians over in a bid to help Lovie out. Lovecraft eventually reenacts the closing scenes of the work and acts the part of Dagon to get a piece of Eito for herself. Although "causing an incident" was suggested by Historia as an idea to help Lovecraft get physically intimate with Eito as he did with all of the other characters, it seems Lovecraft was both playing the part in jest and for keeps, because of the story setting. Lovecraft eventually gives her bookmark to Eito, and she joins the chat group with the other characters where her strange Cthulhu fixation gives her a unique charm in an easygoing chat environment.

The protagonist of the Arsene Lupin works by Maurice Leblanc. Unlike the master thief portrayed in the original tales, this Lupin is prone to catastrophic errors because of carelessness or clumsiness and frequently needs Ganimard's help to bail out of trouble. Despite her inexperience and lack of technique, Lupin is willing to work hard for her ultimate goal of becoming a master thief worthy of her story and has enlisted the help of the Register, Maurice, as her mentor. She uses her gun against the worms, if she's brought along her home-made robot it can also deploy its weaponry against massed worms. Although she hones her thief skills at Maurice's hideout underneath the Eiffel Tower, her fixation on accomplishing tasks in the most stylish way possible tends to get her in trouble when she falls for her occasional careless fumble. She's also liable to make mistakes when she's trying to impress people watching her, something Ganimard is all too familiar with. Grimoire identifies her latent frustration with always relying on Maurice and Ganimard to get her out of scrapes and grants her the power to manipulate the worms to rob precious works. Although drunk on the power of the worms to seize objects by force, Lupin is made to realise the hollowness of such an achievement and regains her senses enough to have the parasitic worm exorcised.

The protagonist of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Match Girl". She's named Match, after her occupation. She is corrupted by one of Grimoire's parasitic worms, Andersen calls in Eito and Tale in a bid to exorcise the worm without physically harming Match. The matches she carries can burn worms to cinders. The matches also have the power of illusion, they draw out and show the viewer's deepest desires, if only for a moment. Abuse of the matches can make viewers addicted to the visions. A gyaru match seller who would much prefer making money charming men rather than selling matches, Match is frustrated with her established role in her tragic story and would much prefer living life the way she pleases. She argues with Andersen a lot, and sometimes gets into snowball fights in the eternal Christmas that is Odense. Despite their arguments, the pair get along like a genuine pair of sisters and Match cares for Andersen enough to deliberately adopt a provocative stance in a bid to force Andersen out of her shell and be more assertive. Because she is perennially impecunious, Match has mastered the art of extracting the maximum out of the minimal resources she has. She also has a good heart and is willing to give up presents given to her for children she believes need it more than she does.

The Register for the Arsene Lupin works. She calls for reinforcements after her world undergoes a full-scale assault by Grimoire's worms. After greeting Eito and Tale, she fights alongside them as they make their way to the prison where Lupin is trapped. Like the other Registers, she has complete awareness of what goes on in Paris as well as the mental state of the characters under her watch. She is closest to the image of the ideal Arsene Lupin aspires to, hence Lupin begs Maurice to teach her the skills required to excel as a phantom thief. Ganimard works with Maurice to set up "simulations" allowing Lupin to get actual field experience in stealing precious works. Although proud of Lupin and Ganimard, Maurice underestimates the strain Lupin is under in constantly having to rely on others to get her out of trouble. She also has trouble getting Ganimard to vent her frustrations safely, when Ganimard goes "off the grid" to binge on whiskey bonbons Maurice has no choice but to ask the Librarians for assistance.

Unlike the original story which highlights the price of the demonic pact, Mephisto's raison d'etre in the story world is to serve others without asking for anything in return. Although she primarily serves Faust, she will take requests from Goethe and others if she thinks it appropriate. She can manipulate Faust like a human club to strike the worms. In combat, her nails become claws, but she primarily relies on magic to obliterate worms. Accustomed to using magic to accomplish whatever task she is set, Mephisto is unfamiliar with the concept of achieving something through graft and effort. Through the events of the main story, she also learns the value of letting Faust use her as a tool to achieve her ends, instead of as a crutch. Mephisto's magic is capable of not only summoning mundane objects like the perfect hamburger, it can even accomplish the impossible such as delivering completed works from authors who died before they could finish. Mephisto's obsession with serving others drives her on even when she's in no physical condition to do so. The stress of not helping others and being waited on instead does have spectacular consequences when she finally loses it.

Grimoire's command of worms is really because of Mushiko. The white worm who initially consumes Iris, she helps Iris stay alive and creates an affectionate bond with Grimoire, which is generally one-sided as the latter tends to hit out at her when she gets excessively clingy and only views Mushiko as a tool for her ultimate goal. Mushiko gets jealous of Tale's achievement in creating a stable story world and is driven insane to the point where she swallows Tale's diary and then goes on a rampage in the Great Library devouring entire shelves of stories to increase her strength. She threatens to make her way to the wellspring of imagination, but is eventually stalled by Historia, Shiori and Eito giving Grimoire enough time to pacify her and expel the consumed books. Mushiko's constant devouring of story pages apparently allowed her to evolve into a story character in her own right, which allows her to co-exist together with the other Library denizens as a character in Grimoire's world. Although she is exorcised of her worm aspect, she remains gluttonous and retains the ability to detect worms which surpasses even Historia. After joining the library, her mental state is the same as Tale's when she was just awakened, so Mushiko is allowed to work at the Great Library both to mature as a character and to atone for her past misdemeanours.

The protagonist of "Journey to the West". Many of the characteristics in the original story are inherited by this character, including the propensity for mischief, insubordination and use of magic to create clones. Relies on the signature staff to pummel worms. Chafing at Wu Cheng En's lessons on deeper knowledge of the story she stars in, Wukong summons clones to gather the famous treasures from the tale in order to decide who the strongest is. The resulting commotion is so destructive Wu Cheng En has no choice but to ask the Librarians for help to pacify the situation. It transpires Wukong's clones were corrupted by the parasitic worms during their fetch quests, so Wukong cannot manually unsummon them and has to physically incapacitate the clones first before they can be dispelled. Because the clones have exactly the same personality as the original, the effect of the worms on the clones is also reflected when the original is corrupted. Wukong's latent desire is to be free from the constraints imposed by Cheng En, his master Sanzang and the other disciples. Before she completely loses control, she realises complete freedom does not mean physically harming those responsible for his current restraints. After the worm is exorcised and Grimoire retreats, Wukong continues to mess around. An unexpected visit of the Great Library leads to a lot of trouble for the Librarians, which frequently leads to Wukong being hit with the boulder punishment like the original tale allowing her time to reflect on her actions, however briefly.

A mysterious girl Eito finds and awakens in a bleak and empty world. She immediately latches on to him as her "Prince Charming" and shortly after they are transported to the Great Library. As she has amnesia and remembers nothing about herself, Eito names her "Tale" and resolves to stay at the Library until he helps her recover her memories and the story she is the main character of. Tale stays by Eito's side during his adventures and shares a room with him when they rest for the night. She starts a diary soon after she arrives in the hopes it will help to recover her memories as her encounters and experiences with Eito increase. Friendly, optimistic, positive and easily excited by new things, Tale acts as Eito's emotional support during his adventures. After meeting other characters and registers, she usually attaches the "chan" suffix to their first names after meeting them for the first time. Because she has no memory of her past, she is unprejudiced and is always on the lookout to make more friends. She frequently asks Eito and the others about unfamiliar terms and concepts, including those which are inappropriate for someone with the mental age and innocence of a young child. Tale is really the "Prima" of the story Historia wrote with help from Shiori. Grimoire (as Iris) created her based on the template of "Sleeping heroines awakened by their Prince Charming". She adores Eito and is physically affectionate with him from the outset. Although Tale does not have the combat ability of the other characters, her experiences written down in her diary prove to be the solution to the problem of maintaining a story without robbing pages from other stories. As her story is all about visits to other tales and her experiences, she is allowed to work as a Librarian and enter other stories as a guest because her tale lacks a significant "mental imprint" which could negatively impact the host story if she stays for an excessive period. In the end, she stays and work by Eito's side in his editorial job and can return freely to the Great Library and her own story via Eito's Colette.

The Register for Journey to the West. She shares many of the characteristics of Boddhisatva Guanyin, including her propensity for Buddhist sayings and her ability to chant the sutra which constricts the headband on Wukong's forehead. Extremely magnanimous, she understands Wukong is playing her role in the story as intended when she's indulging herself in mischievous pranks. She does step in when Wukong goes too far, and Wukong herself is terrified of Cheng'en that she'll listen to orders after token resistance. Even after learning the source of Wukong's frustrations, Cheng'en does not reproach Wukong for her motives. Instead, she advises Wukong to treat the experience as a trial to better herself. Cheng'En loves nothing more than to expound on the mysteries of the Buddhist Sutras to an attentive audience. Unfortunately her sermons are so powerful they can draw the audience back for more, which is a problem if the audience is comprised of Registers from other stories. In addition, the listeners are so entranced they undergo a kind of brainwashing which has residual effects if the sermons are forcibly stopped. Wukong is aware of the power of the sermons, so she advises others to flee while they can.

Eito's teacher for Japanese language classes. She's still a teaching assistant, but is widely respected by the student body for her ability to listen to student's concerns and address them honestly. She's an OG of Eito's high school. She shares a little of her past when Eito worries about his career path. Maika aspired to be an actress, one day dreaming to act out screenplays written by Shiori on a national stage. Unfortunately her acting ability was middling, and she realised the dream they shared could not be fulfilled due to her lack of talent. Despite this, she never blamed Shiori for her retirement. While deliberating about her future path, she committed to helping others fulfil their dreams through the teaching occupation. Although she lost touch with Shiori as the latter's career took off, after Shiori is returned from the Great Library contact is re-established between the former best friends. It is through Maika and the shared experience of the school library which allows Shiori to reunite with Eito after their return in spite of the temporal difference between the two.
