Caloria Cricket is one of the last known remaining insect users, a small tribe of humans with strange abilities granted to them by the insects that live inside their bodies. When she was a small child, her tribe in Zeth was virtually wiped out in an ethnic purge by some of Zeth's first class citizens by order of King Gandhi's predecessor, who resented them for having powers that had nothing to do with magic. Because of this, she lived in isolation for seven years in the ruins of her village until meeting Rance's party. Though she initially avoided them at first, as she was understandably afraid of strangers, Rance's lack of prejudice towards her and the understanding of the rest of Ice Flame eventually convinced her to join Rance and his group.

She was born in Portugal, a rich mercantile city where she learned the basic tenets of business and bargaining. She is a naturally gifted fortune diviner, and despite it being a highly forbidden act, when she was very young she used her omikuji skill on herself to discover her fate. On that day she learned with horror that she was cursed with Misfortune, and in her panic rewrote it as Great Fortune before forgetting the whole ordeal. Nelson Server is the former leader of the Zeth-based anti-magic extremist group the Pentagon who controlled the organization during its final years of operation, and one of the main figures responsible for the fall of the magic nation. Born into an aristocratic family, Nelson enjoyed a life of privilege for much of his early years. When required to take the magic exam that decided whether a person became a first or second class citizen, however, Nelson was discovered to have very little skill in the Magic Arts, and failed it even after several weeks of extensive tutoring, resulting in him becoming a second class citizen despite his noble upbringing. Angered at having his entire future ripped away from him in an instant, Nelson made a vow to become the secretary of education of Zeth in order to abolish the magic test. Due to his second class citizen status, however, he was met with only ridicule for his efforts.

Born into the Alphorne family, one of the oldest and most prestigious noble families in all of Zeth, Radon enjoyed a life of pleasure and privilege from birth. His family's enormous influence allowed for him to attain an estate known as the Amber Castle that was even larger and more decadent than the royal palace of Zeth, as well as the title of secretary of education, one of the most important positions in the entire nation. As the secretary of education, Radon continued to support the "Pressure Free Education" acts passed generations before, which made educational opportunities within Zeth only open to those who could afford them, further widening the power gap between the wealthy first class and the struggling second class. During his free time, Radon organized a slave fighting arena, where he pitted groups of non-magic using slaves against various monsters to see who could survive the longest for the entertainment of the other nobles. He also organized the mage supremacist party amongst his fellow nobles, which stood in opposition to the progressive reformative ambitions of King Ragnarokarc Super Gandhi.

Of the 8 Knights, Rodney has the least amount of information known about his background prior to joining the Pentagon. However, his extensive knowledge of chemistry and general intelligence suggested that he came from a highly educated background, making it likely that he was born into a first class family and was reduced to second class citizenship only after failing the magic exam. At some point, he was persuaded by the words of Nelson Server to join the Pentagon. Starlevel the Great is an enigmatic being who has made several appearances throughout the Rance Series. An artificial hybrid of Human genes and those of a Kurupistonian, an alien race from the planet Kurupiston that exists within the same universe as The Continent, Starlevel the Great was created under the name "Mars the Great" for the purpose of assimilating within human society to acquire females of the species for use in kurupistonian breeding. While the eccentricities that stemmed from being an alien lifeform caused Mars the Great to do an extremely poor job of blending in with humans, it also bestowed him with an unconventional charisma that caused others to be drawn toward him. Over time, Mars the Great amassed a cult of personality around himself, and was able to found a city in the southwestern corner of the Free Cities Alliance, which was named Mars in tribute to him. Yamada Chizuko is one of the Four Lords of Zeth, and for a long time the only one to try to live up to the associated responsibilities, as Magic the Gandhi is still finishing up her studies, while Nagi Su Ragarl and Papaya Server simply do not care.
