One of the main heroines, Yukiko is a second-year at Yasogami High School, Yu and Yosuke's classmate and Chie's best friend. Being the daughter of the owner of the local hot springs inn called the Amagi Inn, she is pressured to be the next one in the line to inherit it. Due to this, she is forced to live a strict life, and her biggest insecurity is being chained down. Her whole life she has felt she is on a railroad track with no opportunity for deviation to the point where she has developed a desire to run away from such life and start anew. After accepting her true self, she gained the ability to wield the Persona, Konohana Sakuya. Yukiko is a rich, elegant young woman who is popular with boys and girls alike. Often scoring the best during exams, she is very intelligent and often repeats the material with Chie. At first Yukiko was very reserved, but after being saved she turns livelier. She also truly appreciates and cares about her friends, as well as her parents and staff from the Inn, and often vows to become an even stronger, more dependable person so that one day she, in turn, will be able to support and protect them just like they have did to her in the past. Despite her appearance and overall personality, Yukiko is quite airheaded as well - she often misreads situations and tends to have very easy laughing fits from the slightest jokes. She and Chie are both horrible cooks to the point where their food was branded with the name "Myster Food X" because of its terrible appearance and appearance-matching flavor.

Yosuke is a second-year at Yasogami High School, Yu's classmate and the son of the Junes Department Store's Inaba branch manager. Yosuke is a clumsy transfer-student who arrived six months before the protagonist. He is often the target for jokes about his lack of muscles and body strength, and fights with blunt, double-handed objects — such as wrenches, but moreso knives and kunai. Yosuke doesn't usually think before he says something, which results in him sticking his foot in his mouth, and unintentionally insulting someone. He has occasionally exhibited some homophobic and insensitive behavior in regards to Kanji. He displays genuine regret after these instances, however, apologizing or offering to make it up to them. He tends to be a bit of a wannabe ladies' man and has a fascination for girls. But beneath most of that, he shows great insight with decent deducing, and is often on task of the situation on hand, and can be very serious at times. He also tends to keep a good face in order to make sure the team is in their best spirits and he cares a lot about the protagonist, as well as having a strong sense of justice. His biggest insecurities are boredom and loneliness. He feels the town has nothing comparing to the city and that his life in the city is the reason for his unpopularity. However, by the end of the original game he has grown to love the town and has made friends with the rest of the Investigation Team and feels accomplished in having a notable contribution to the group. His persona is Jiraiya, a ninja from the Japanese folklore, who can shapeshift into a giant toad.

One of the main heroines, Rise is a first-year at Yasogami High School and an idol who returned to Inaba after a short hiatus. There, she lives with her grandmother and helped her at her tofu shop. After she overcomes her biggest fear - that she is losing her true self due to her idol work - she gains the ability to wield the Persona Himiko, a strict and disciplined shaman queen of Yamatai, an ancient country within the islands that would become Japan. As the general supporter/navigator of the group, Rise helps the team stay on their toes, informing them all sorts of things in battle and using Himiko to scan out enemy weaknesses and boosting their spirits whenever she can, even going so far as to use her Persona to heal the team, raise their attack or defense and more. Rise is cheerful, outspoken, naughty, cute, and is quite boastful about herself, although very sweet deep down. She is referred to as a "dangerous girl" by Chie, due to her boldness in flirting with Yuu and how she teases the other guys as well. Rise is quickly annoyed by the smallest things, which ends up with her crying dramatically, and sometimes producing crocodile tears. She's rather childish and possessive; she once pouted and told Yu he mustn’t call another girl “cute”. Despite having a mischievously playful side while with her friends and offering a lot of sass to back up for it, she is also very passionate about her friends and is always there to lend them a hand. It also should be noted that if her friends are in danger, Rise will do whatever it takes to make sure they are safe.

Teddie is a mysterious character living inside the TV world, but after Persona 4 he starts living in the real world together with the other Investigation Team members. Being a comic relief character, Teddie is seen flirting at the girls of the Investigation Team on numerous occasions, but fails every time. Other than that, he is bubbly and cute and is known to lighten the mood when investigating the case, much like Chie. He idolizes and respects Yuu, to the point of calling him 'Sensei.' In the Japanese version, he has a verbal tick, adding "-kuma" after every sentence, while in the English version his speech is filled with dozens of bear puns, like saying "Bear-sona" while summoning his Persona. He's persona is Kintoki-Douji, the adult version of Kintaro. He is a folk hero who was raised by animals and had superhuman strength.

Narukami Yuu is the protagonist of the Persona 4 series and a high school student who moves to the countryside of Inaba for a year with his uncle and younger cousin as a result of his parents working abroad. At the same time, he attends Yasogami High School where he meets most of the game's cast, and happens to accidentally form an investigation team for a very bizarre murder case. In between this all, he discovers the strange power within himself - the power to wield Personas. Being the wielder of the Wild Card, he can use more than one Persona at the same time. Despite this, his default Persona and the one he is shown the most with is Izanagi, the creator deity of both creation and life in Japanese mythology. Yuu is a very mature person with a sharp mind though he appears stoic at times. He deeply cares for his friends and one of the few ways to truly anger him is to threaten either them or Nanako which causes him to become very cold. Yuu's most consistent trait in all of his depictions (anime, manga and other games) is his need to be connected to people. He views himself as a weak person and gets his strength from his bonds and being accepted by others, and when he is separated from his friends, he loses his usual confidence and becomes more withdrawn.

One of the main heroines, Chie is a second-year at Yasogami High School, Yuu and Yosuke's classmate and Yukiko's best friend. An energetic tomboy with a love of kung-fu movies, she is very outgoing and has a upbeat personality. Chie's biggest insecurity is her femininity. She has an inferiority complex in comparing herself to Yukiko and is jealous of all the male attention Yukiko receives. However, after she accepts her true self and realizes that she can just be herself, she gains the ability to wield the Persona, Tomoe, who's based on Tome Gozen, a female samurai who served in the Genpei War, which led to the establishment of the Kamakura Shogunate. Due to her hotblooded nature, Chie can be somewhat short-tempered, especially with Yosuke, and is slow to back down from a challenge. She also has a poster of Bruce Lee in her room. As to add to her tomboyish personality, she also loves meat, especially the steak at Junes. However, she and Yukiko are both horrible cooks to the point where their food was branded with the name "Myster Food X" because of its terrible appearance and appearance-matching flavor. One of the main heroines, Naoto is a first-year at Yasogami High School and the fifth generation of the famed Shirogane detectives. Her biggest insecurity is her gender, as well as her age. She yearns to be seen as an adult, and expresses frustration at being treated like a child by the police force. She hates being looked down upon, and fears no one will take her seriously as a female, in a sexist occupation field. Naoto is ashamed of being female, but after accepting her true self and the fact she does not need to change who she is to suit the world - she gains the power of wield the persona, Sukuna-Hikona and becomes more confident. Having lost both her parents in a car accident when she was very young, Naoto acts very mature in spite of her age. As a descendant of a respected lineage of famous detectives, she wears formal clothing, and deepens her voice when she speaks in a sophisticated, stilted manner. Naoto has difficulty making friends and is lonely as a result. Despite her mature nature, Naoto has a shy side to her, as she refuses to wear a bikini at the Yasogami Beauty Pageant. She also becomes embarrassed during the Investigation Team's visit to the Amagi Inn, when the schedules for the hot springs' use were confused. And when in a state of fear and/or panic, her voice becomes more feminine than usual, possibly meaning she only has a masculine voice when she is composed.

Kanji is a first-year at Yasogami High School and known to many as a notorious delinquent since middle school. He lives together with his mother because his father is deceased, while running a textile shop together. Kanji has certain sexuality issues, which are a source of insecurity for him and also a running gag in the original game. By the end of it, he acknowledges a deeper acceptance and understanding regarding feminine and masculine interests, and points out that his sexual orientation is not really the issue. After accepting himself, he gains the ability to wield the Persona, Take-Mikazuchi, the Shinto god of thunder. Despite his gruff outlook and rough personality, he loves knitting and cooking and often uses his rough personality due to misunderstandings. For example, he once went after a rowdy biker gang, but only to stop them from disturbing his mother. Compared to the rest of the team, Kanji tends to be a bit slow on the uptake. However, he is straightforward and decisive. Through the game he realizes that his impulsive actions can drag others down, and that he can balance that by instead giving them his support.

Adachi is a sociopathic, sadistic, misogynistic, misanthropic, and manipulative man. He acts as if everything was a game and doesn't seem to care about the consequence of his actions. He believes that there was nothing great about the real world, calling it "boring", "shitty", "dull" and "annoying as hell" to him. He views his reasons for what he's doing as justifiable, saying that he wants to save and prevent humanity from the pain, suffering, boredom and despair of life. Despite all this he has quite a laidback attitude and in addition, although Adachi won't admit it out loud, he genuinely values his friendship with Dojima, who used to be his superior.

Aegis is an android, an Anti-Shadow Suppression Weapon, sent to observe the protagonist and a member of the Shadow Operatives along Mitsuru and Akihiko. When she was first encountered in Persona 3 and after joining SEES, Aegis operated truly like a robot: her initial personality was simply to obey orders. Due to her humanoid appearance, it allows her to process thoughts like a human, which in turn makes it easier for her to handle a Persona. After awakening to the Wild Card, Aegis' personality further develops into her current personality of a sweet, gentle, empathetic and strong-hearted young woman with a talent for leadership. She is also very polite to everybody, always using the suffix '-san' when addressing them. In the original Japanese version, she ends her sentences with "de arimasu" prior to developing emotions. While she can wield multiple personas, she's most commonly seen with Athena, the Greek goddess of justice, wisdom and warfare.

Ken is shown to care for animals, such as Koromaru, who is also his best buddy in Persona 4 Ultimax. Although he is very mature for his age, he likes to watch a children's show, Featherman R, but he prefers to keep it a secret. He seems to collect a lot of the Featherman R figurines, as well. Ken notes that one of the reasons he uses spears in battle is so that he'll be on even ground with an adult. He has a strong dislike towards milk, but he forces himself to drink it believes he believes it can make him become taller. Unfortunately, it seems he may be lactose-intolerant and it makes him sick. Elizabeth's tendencies to act on impulse and to not take dangerous things and situations seriously often results in either baffling or even enraging (often the enemy) those involved in the crisis with her surprisingly cool demeanor. A mysterious announcer, who looks suspiciously similar to Teddie. His true identity is Hinokagutsuchi, also known as Kagutsuchi and Homusubi, the god of fire in Japanese mythology. His mother, Izanami, burnt to death during childbirth. His father, Izanagi, beheaded Kagutsuchi with his sword, and cut his body into eight pieces, which then became volcanoes. Kagutsuchi's corpse created many deities, including Take-Mikazuchi, the Shinto god of thunder, Futsunushi, a Shinto deity of swords, Amatsu Mikaboshi, the god of stars in Japanese mythology, and Ouyamatsumi, a god of mountains, sea, and war in Japanese mythology. Kagutsuchi is the patron deity of blacksmiths and ceramic workers. During the events of "Mayonaka Arena" and "Ultra Suplex Hold", he works with Minazuki Shou in his plan for revenge.

Mitsuru is the heir world-famous Kirijo Group and the founder and leader of the Shadow Operatives. Mitsuru is calm, confident, mature, responsible and very intelligent. During her time in Gekkoukan High, she was the student council president. She is also good friends with Akihiko. Due to her caring attitude, however, there are times where she tends to go out of her way often to accept responsibility for many things that especially involves her family's history, and it becomes Mitsuru's aim to atone for the sins of the Kirijo family. Mitsuru can be fierce and even scary when she is angered or upset, such as when she berates one of the teachers for trying to cover up Fuuka's disappearance. This usually results in her saying "This... is... unacceptable!" and performing an "execution". What this "execution" is remains a mystery. She wields the Artemisia persona. Shou is the main antagonist of Persona 4 Ultimax, claiming to be behind all of the events. Sho is a young man with a vicious streak and an interest in fighting. He is a puerile, flippant, hotheaded and anxious young man. He is a loner at heart and calls friendship with others "useless", viewing people as too weak to rely on. Shou is described as a misanthrope, loathing everything and everyone, and wishing for a world where only he lives. He also has a tendency to make puns so bad even Yukiko or Teddie can't fix them/find them funny. He wields the Tsukiyomi persona, the deification of the moon and the ruler of the night in Shintoism.

She is a hardworking, serious and proactive girl who loves her school a lot and does a lot to keep it the way it is. She is a caring individual who doesn't want to hurt, let alone kill, anyone she cares about. In the Japanese version, she speaks in a Kansai accent, and in the English version in a Boston accent. In reality however, she is one of the Anti-Shadow Suppression Weapons alongside Aigis. The Yasogami High School inside the TV world and the Midnight Arena itself are both actually Labrys' dungeon, created by her desire to be understood and accepted as a normal girl. After accepting her true self, she gains the persona Ariadne, who's most known for helping Theseus escape from the Minotaur's labyrinth by giving him a ball of string.

Cool and well-respected, Akihiko is serious and determined, as well as cracking small jokes on small occasions (such as with Junpei, though this happens not as often), and tends to show his excitement for a big challenge. However, when he is dragged into Junpei's various antics, unlike his usual self, often starts to panic and completely lose his composure (often due to fearing Mitsuru's anger). He also has an aggressive side, which he usually demonstrates when dealing with Shadows. He never gives up and always tries to get stronger in order to protect what is dear to him. He wields the Polydeuces persona. Polydeuces, aka Pollux, was a hero from Greek mythology. Son of Zeus and brother to Castor, he fused with his brother and was transformed into the Gemini constellation after his brother's death.

Yukari is a former member of SEES and currently a university student, model and one of the main actors for the children's show Phoenix Ranger Featherman Victory. Yukari is cheerful and strong-willed, but tends to drive herself beyond her limits. Though she is known for her major mood swings, occasional displays of angst and emotional outbursts, Yukari is actually friendly and caring towards her peers, especially towards Fuuka, and later, Mitsuru. In Ultimax, she becomes a reserve member of the Shadow Operatives. Yukari also has phasmophobia, the fear of ghosts and is easily spooked, which Junpei, Akihiko and Ryoji often took advantage of by intentionally spooking her or telling her ghost stories to agitate her. Yukari's phasmophobia is also symbolic of her fear of death. Yukari has an extreme fear of death and the thought of non-existence sends chills down her spine. Her persona is Io, king of the gods in Greek mythology. She's the priestess of Hera and the wife of Zeus.

Nanako is Ryoutaro's daughter and Yu's kind-hearted cousin. Her mother died in a hit and run when she was young, and thus all the household chores fall to her, but despite her age she does an admirable job managing both the cooking and cleaning after school. Due to this, she is quite mature for a girl her age though has moments of childish innocence. She loves Junes, in both its slogan and in visiting their Inaba branch with her family and friends. She tends to be shy around strangers, but adores spending quality time with her father and cousin whenever possible. As she develops more trust in her older cousin, she begins calling him "onii-chan" as if he really was her older brother. Although she harbors a great love for her father, she sometimes questions his love for both her and Chisato, her late mother.

He is a very hardworking detective who had problems with Nanako before, not completely understanding the meaning behind the word 'family' and just focusing on chasing the murderer of his late wife, Chisato. Ryotaro is a kind man, though a bit serious as well. He tends to be a bit overprotective of Nanako sometimes, which could be due to the fact that his wife died in a hit-and-run. Marie is a character added in Persona 4 Golden. Marie is cranky, sarcastic, irritable, very foul-mouthed and often prone to mood swings. She will not hesitate to voice out her opinion or express her thoughts, regardless of how it would make everyone feel. However, her "lack of emotion" is basically just her way to deal with her own shyness, insecurity and naïveté. This is also why she wants the Protagonist to show her Inaba: She wants to learn about the world and who she really is. Marie sometimes expresses her thoughts in poems which often deal with depressing themes like farewells and existentialism, questioning her own origin. However, her poems almost always tend to suck and she gets embarrassed when she finds the protagonist reading them. Besides this, Marie is into fashion, loves nature (another major theme in her poems) and is apparently concerned about her figure, which is why she only eats healthy food. Labrys' Shadow and the main antagonist of the game. Shadow Labrys is sadistic and cruel, enjoying having friends fight each other senselessly. She is also very manipulative, with her abilities of deception and freeform disguise aiding her to control others to follow her plans for the P-1 Grand Prix in order to complete her ulterior motive of becoming free from Labrys. However, as powerful and cunning she is, Shadow Labrys has a rather short temper, often becoming extremely irate at those who try to stop her or indirectly foil her plans. Like other Shadows derived from people, she has the skillful ability to coax her other self to disown her to empower herself.

Fuuka is a former member of SEES and both Mitsuru and Akihito's junior. She is a kind, friendly and compassionate girl who would do anything for her friends. During her high school times, she was extremely shy, timid and a bit of a pushover, but managed to overcome these attributes. She does not participate in battles directly, but instead uses her Persona to transmit information, analyze the enemies and so on from the sidelines. Despite her innocent appearance, Fuuka is skilled with computers and machines from watching her father handle electronics. Her persona is Juno, the Roman goddess of womanhood and the governor of the other gods.
