The main character is the player character and primary protagonist of Ebon Light. At age nine, the main character's father, Koris, passed away, leaving her in the care of her shrewd aunt Vanya. Despite the circumstances and Vanya's initial vague reluctance, the main character appears to have been well taken care of by Vanya. Like her name and appearance, the main character's personality is completely determined by the player and their decisions. During initial customization, the player can choose to give the main character one of three personality types: Charm, Cunning, and Tenacity. The Charm personality type is described as "attractive and likable", the Cunning personality type is described as "clever and observant", and the Tenacity personality type is described as "resilient and determined". In certain situations, each personality will determine the extended actions available to the player.

Instead of being born to the demanding General with his high stakes, strict rules, and fierce demands, Ernol was born to the prodigal son. He sees the world in his own particular way, and uses his means to achieve personal goals which other Gha’alians perceive as frivolous or pointless. It’s been considered that were Haron to ever set his sights on a larger scheme, he might be a force to be reckoned with; eerily capable of talking, buying, manipulating, bribing and threatening his way in and out of all manner of things, but (thankfully?) his concerns have always been personal and self serving. Laceaga has had a few minorly impressive moments in his military career, but nothing which sent ripples through the Forces, just enough prestige to get him saddled with a scouting partner like Vadeyn Milirose. Laceaga seems unbothered by his slow advancement, as though this too is a calculation. For all intents and purposes, Laceaga is an ideal soldier. He relies on intimidation and aggression to get his way, unconcerned with little beyond serving the Forces and living a quiet life. He does have a few curious connections with the Onyx Chandler, and some might say he keeps himself too closed off from his peers, but no one is concerned about Laceaga, and that suits him just fine. The mystery of how Vadeyn managed to cultivate such a soft heart in such an unforgiving atmosphere, no less how it has managed to remain uncrushed in the six decades Vadeyn has been alive, is a thing that’s piqued the interest and ire of many. He is, they will say, surely destined for tragedy; eventually to be consumed by the pressure, or snuffed out by it. However, Vadeyn has no interest in complete surrender just yet. His is a quiet-perhaps ridiculous-optimism, which nets him a few friends, and quite a few enemies. Lonre Milirose is the fourth son of Gawloyes and Mietwen Milirose. His eldest brother, Faelain, is a wildly successful general in his own right, and lived up to the burden of a firstborn. The second eldest, Reklien, shows equal promise in his relentless efforts to overcome Faelain. Lonre was left in a curious place, lacking a certain desire to wrestle in the struggle of his brothers, finding an extreme distaste in the struggle at all. Gha'alia, eternally burning, eternally biting at its own heel, felt useless and redundant to him from a very young age. His descent into the role of the prodigal son began in his teenage years at adamant refusal to play by honored Gha'alian rules. He would take no training, and that forced on him would be made a mockery. By the time he was an adult, he had already been publicly disowned, and though all expected him to fall and perish in an unforgiving world offering him nothing but ire, he managed to flourish. Mietwen Milirose is a feared and beloved woman of terrifying esteem. Even before marrying the Grand General, she had been famous among her people; an assassin of exceptional skill, who did what assassins mustn't and became known for her face and name. Her marriage came at a fortunate time in her career; no longer able to depend on anonymity, a notable marriage to, arguably, the most powerful man in Gha'alia kept her out of the Gha'alian Alluvion's typical discharge. In a not unrelated event shortly thereafter, the Alluvion was dismantled and replaced by the Gha'alian Masks. Mietwen was appointed Mask Commander. Mietwen remained Mask Commander through a series of successful campaigns, until retiring shortly after the birth of her seventh son. She has become more and more reclusive in recent years, though is still frequently seen at her husband's side in less formal settings. Though she is no longer Mask Commander and her days as an assassin are long behind her, many suspect she is still very much active. Whether or not this is with Gawloyes' sanction or outside his reach remains the popular question.
