The protagonist. Forced to flee his home in Tokuyama after his brother's murder, and injured while trying to save his sister Saya from being kidnapped, he is saved by the intervention of the Shinsengumi. Learning that he managed to kill one of his attackers in self-defence despite having never picked up a sword before, the Shinsengumi members are highly impressed. With him and his sister having nowhere else to go, and no other people to rely on, he agrees to join them as a recruit, in order to hone his swordsmanship, and also to give Saya a safe place to be. But there is seemingly more to his almost miraculous abilities with a sword than meets the eye...

A licensed master of the Tennen Rishin-Ryuu style, Inoue is a straightforward yet laid-back individual, giving her notoriety within the ranks of the Shinsengumi. Inoue is among the rare Shinsengumi members unafraid to voice her opinions to Kondou and Toshizou, her long-time friends. She tends to observe from a distance, intervening only when absolutely needed. "I've always wondered what kind of couple Isarin & Hijirin would make if one of them were a man..."

The protagonist's younger sister. After her and her brother's lives are saved by the Shinsengumi, she settles into their barracks with him after he agrees to join them. She is able to strike up friendships with many of her new comrades, even Serizawa, who is ordinarily quite secluded from the others. She enjoys cooking, and makes herself useful by helping out with cooking meals for everyone. Strangely, she is rather averse to seeing her brother bathing with other women.
