At the time of
Chiharu Fuyursuki's death, Toyama was the copy editor for the local newspaper, the Centra Times. Known as "The Red Pen Gatekeeper," he would go around checking young reporters' copies like mad. Due to his vigorous efforts, a great many articles never made it to the page. Toyama and
Minorikawa would often clash regarding the quality of the latter's writing.
His book The Invincible Journalist, published under Heaven Publishing, was a candidate for the Japan Nonfiction Prize.
